Getting started
Which Reddit threads should I analyze?
Start with the threads AI assistants already cite for your topics. Then add what you find on Reddit itself.
ThreadMention judges the threads you give it, so the threads you choose matter more than anything else. There are two good sources.
1. Best: threads AI assistants already cite (from a GEO tool)
Start with your GEO tool's citation report, for example, OtterlyAI, or Reddit threads you find yourself. OtterlyAI is an example only; ThreadMention is not affiliated with or endorsed by OtterlyAI. Any GEO or AI-search visibility tool you already use works the same way, and you don't need one to use ThreadMention. A citation report can show you which sources ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and others cite when they answer the questions you track. Reddit threads are often among them.
Those threads are the best place to start, because AI assistants are already using them to answer questions in your space. A helpful, honest reply there is part of a conversation that AI tools already read.
- In your GEO tool, open the citations or sources report for the prompts or topics you track.
- Filter to sources from reddit.com.
- Export or copy the thread links. Links to individual posts contain
/comments/. - Paste them into Analyze threads, up to 20 at a time, one per line.
Tips:
- Start with the threads cited most often, or cited for your most important prompts.
- Translated links (with
?tl=at the end) are fine. ThreadMention uses the original thread. - Expect some skips. A thread can be cited by AI and still be the wrong place for a brand reply. The verdict tells you which ones to leave alone.
2. Also good: search Reddit yourself
No GEO tool? You can find strong threads by hand:
- Search Reddit for the questions your customers ask: "best tool for...", "alternatives to...", "how do you handle...".
- Ask Google or an AI assistant those questions and note which Reddit threads come up in the answer or the sources.
- Follow a few subreddits where your customers spend time.
Threads that tend to be a good fit
- Someone asks for a recommendation or compares options in your category.
- Someone describes a problem your product solves.
- Older threads that are still open. They keep being read and cited.
Threads to avoid
- Subreddits that ban self-promotion. Check the rules in the sidebar; ThreadMention doesn't read them for you.
- Locked or archived threads, because nobody can reply. ThreadMention can't always detect them, so check the thread yourself.
- Heated arguments, jokes, memes and news threads.
- Threads about a competitor's outage or a personal complaint, where a brand reply looks opportunistic.
Copying the right link
Paste the link to the post itself (it contains /comments/), not a subreddit or search page. If you find a thread on Reddit, open it and copy the link from your browser's address bar. Links from Reddit's Share button (they look like /r/name/s/abc123) don't work yet.
ThreadMention doesn't guarantee that replying in a cited thread changes what AI assistants say. It helps you take part in those conversations in a way people, and the tools that read Reddit, are more likely to value.
